Now, it’s time to dive straight into the list of the top 10 most expensive Pokémon cards. 

1. Pikachu Illustrator [PSA 10]

The most expensive Pokémon card in the world is PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator. This card made headlines in February when Logan Paul decided to auction it for an astonishing $16.5 million. 

It set a new record in the highest price Pokémon cards category. It might not make sense for this card to fetch such an astonishing price. Art-wise, it is just a cute Chubby Pikachu holding a paintbrush and a fountain pen. 

You might ask, why is it so expensive? That is because there are only 39 of these cards in circulation. And most importantly, the only way to get your hands on this card was through the illustration contests held by the Japanese company Corocoro Comic. 

The PSA 10 rating is also an important factor in this price. It is a metric used by many to rate trading cards. 

To get the PSA 10 rating: 

• The card must be perfect 
• All four corners of the card must be sharp 
• There should be no stains on it at all 
• However, there is a slight allowance for printing errors

2. Pikachu Illustrator [PSA 9]

This card, on the list of the most expensive Pokémon cards, should not come as a surprise to anyone. The second on the list is also Pikachu Illustrator, but it is graded PSA 9. 

It was sold for $1,275,000 in the market. Logan Paul bought his PSA 10 Pikachu illustrator for $5,275,000, but he didn’t pay it in full. Instead, he paid only $4,000,000 in cash and a PSA 9 Pikachu illustrator card. So, the value of this card came to be $1,275,000. 

You might have noticed that this card has far lower value than its gem mint version. However, $1,275,000 is still a lot of money for a Pokémon card. 

3. Pikachu Illustrator [PSA 7]

As you might have noticed from the first two, Pikachu Illustrator is a highly sought-after Pokémon card. Even PSA 7 grading is worth a lot. It is priced at $900,000. 

The PSA 7 grading, or near mint condition, means the card has just slight surface wear visible upon close inspection. 

It is the only card in the game that has the card type Illustrator in the top text box. It is also one of the few cards that has two stars in its rarity symbol in the lower right. 

4. Topsun Charizard – Blue Back [PSA 10]

Now, we’ve come to the most expensive Pokémon card, the Charizard variant. Of course, after Pikachu, Charizard is one of the most prized Pokémon cards in the world. 

You may have seen from the image that this Charizard does not look anything like the playable trading cards. That is because this is a collectable card from the candy company called Top Seika. 

This card is worth $493,230 in the open market. 

They printed a lot of these cards back in the day, but only the first print run had a blue back. That is why it is important to mention blue back here. The subsequent prints had green backs. 

5. Trophy Pikachu Silver [PSA 10]

We have another Pikachu on the list, but not Illustrator. This time, it was Trophy Pikachu Silver that was sold for $444,000. 

This card was awarded to the second-place winner of the first and second-ever Pokémon TCG tournaments. These tournaments were held in 1997 and 1998 in Japan. 

These cards feature artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the favorite artists for the old cards. His artwork in this one features a happy Pikachu holding up a silver trophy against a silver background. 

This is one of the cards that does nothing, as it was awarded to tournament winners. 

6. Base Set Charizard – 1st Edition Shadowless [PSA 10]

Base Set Charizard was the ultimate Pokémon card in the game for the longest time. Pikachu dethroned it, but it is still one of the most valuable Pokémon cards. 

Gameplay-wise, it is not a good card that demands consistent energy for almost overkill levels of damage. However, the triple-digit damage was a good reason for people like you and me to get the Base Set Charizard card. 

The PSA 10 copy of the Base Set Charizard 1st Edition Shadowless was sold at $420,000. This was a card that went straight into somewhere safe from the booster pack. 

7. Blastoise WOTC Presentation Galaxy Star Holo [CGC 8.5]

You might have noticed that the text on this card does not look great. If I didn’t know any better, I would have said that it is a fake Pokémon card. However, it is a real card that was part of the small print run. 

In 1998, they printed only four prototypes of this card. Due to its rarity and the CGC rating of 8.5, it was sold at $360,000. The CGC 8.5 rating corresponds to PSA 8-9. 

According to a former employee, this card was created to see how the English versions of Pokémon cards would look. 

8. Trophy Pikachu Bronze [PSA 8]

The bronze version of the Trophy Pikachu was awarded third place in the 1997 and 1998 official tournaments in Japan. 

Just like its silver counterpart featured earlier in the list, this card also features the artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita. In this artwork, Pikachu is holding a bronze trophy against a glowing bronze background. 

As you know, this is a trophy card, so the release of this is very limited. Only 14 verified copies of this card are in circulation. This card was certified by PSA as an 8, meaning near mint condition. 

It was sold for $300,000 in an auction. 

9. Ishihara GX Promo [PSA 7 / PSA 9 with Autograph]

This card features the president and CEO of the Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara. It was released to celebrate his 60th birthday. This was a first where a Pokémon card didn’t feature a Pokémon. 

It was awarded to those who attended an event that ran concurrently with the 2018 World Championship in Nashville. This card featured Tsunekazu Ishihara with a Master Ball and a Rotom. 

It is also classified as an Ultra Beast. The artwork is also quite unique for this one. Mike Cressy designed this special card. 

The autographed version of Ishihara GX with PSA 9 grading was sold for $247,230 via Goldin in 2021. This is also one of the most expensive Pokémon cards released in the 2010s. 

10. Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy [PSA 10]

The next most expensive Pokémon card is Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy (PSA 10). 

This card was handed out to the teams at the 1998 Parent/Child tournament. A team of adults and kids battled it out in this tournament in a 2v2 tag team format. The top 8 teams received this card as a trophy. 

There isn’t much available about this card on the internet. According to some hardcore fans, there are only about 50 copies of this card. 

The PSA 10 quality of the Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy was confirmed to be sold for $175,000 in 2023 via Heritage Auctions. The price is expected to increase as more of these cards are found.
